Election of the Superior General

The day began with a beautiful liturgy prepared by Paraguay…the readings were perfect for the day of election…take my yoke upon you for I am meek and humble of heart. Father Marcos Recolons’, S.J homily was very moving and vividly reminded us that we must help each other carry the other’s burden—and in a special way today, commit to being very supportive of our Superior General.

The joyous news has undoubtedly reached you by now! After three days spent in prayer and discernment the Chapter Delegates voted, in solemn ceremony, for the Superior General for the next six years. Sister Ernestine Velarde, odn, the Vicar General, reminded us of the awesome responsibility that we had before us. We sang the Veni Creator Spiritus, Come Holy Spirit, and after a few moments of silent prayer, the votes were cast, in front of the crucifix and the Bible. Sister Beatriz Acosta Mesa was elected to a second term. She took a solemn oath to be faithful to the Gospel and to uphold the Constitutions of the Company of Mary. Immediately following, the Chapter Delegates and the local community members embraced Sister Beatriz…it was not only an embrace of friendship, but one of obedience and of unity with all of the Sisters of the Company of Mary.
